STURBRIDGE – A grand jury will take up the case of a Walker Pond fireworks display that left a Brookfield 17-year-old with serious burns.
Sean Lavallee, who was injured in the July incident, has been subpoenaed to appear before a Worcester grand jury along with his father, David Brown. They are set to appear on Dec. 18, according to Brown.
Lavallee, a senior at Tantasqua Regional High School, attended the fireworks display on the beach at Walker Pond in July with relatives. After an errant firework went up the right leg of his shorts and exploded, he suffered second and third degree burns to 90 percent of his thigh.
Both Lavallee and Brown declined to comment.
Officials have said that the display was not authorized by the town. In the aftermath of the accident, Sturbridge police also issued a statement saying that Walker Pond representative were uncooperative with their investigation and that witnesses weren’t yielding much information.
The grand jury, which acts as an independent body, will review the evidence presented by a prosecutor and determine whether there is probable cause to return an indictment. Deliberations are closed to the public.
